GEOFFREY HOLDEN REST ON

The great Geoffrey Holder won two Tony Awards in 1978 for costume design and directing “The Wiz”has died today. Shown here in the October 1975 issue of Ebony, Geoffrey in all of his 6’6” splendor is appearing to vicariously tap into all of his creative power - gold cape, sketch pad and pen in hand bought back memories.

I so love this photo. It reminds me of the 1970"s cultural atmosphere in which I enjoyed. As a kid, away from the noise and violations, I enjoyed an imaginatively colorful childhood. One full of drag queens, the arts, social and political gatherings, airplanes, fashion and Garbage Pail Kids - Harlem and Manhattan. A rich poor kid exposed to entirely too much too fast.

My nanny was an emotional transgender woman by the name of Scarlet. Scarlet, although not a woman, was nurturing, affectionate and ferociously protective of me and my brother. She genuinely loved us as we could tell by the emotional outburst of tears whenever she thought that she had disappointed us. My brother, who was just as unaware of Scarlet’s man parts as I was, adored Scarlet and eagerly looked forward to her daily arrival.

Although Geoffrey Holder was in no way a transgender person his countenance and his nationality dearly resembled my Scarlet. Geoffrey Holden, as displayed through mainstream media, was graceful, tall, strong innovative, confident and his contribution to the arts as an Trinidadian actor, choreographer, director, dancer, painter, costume designer, singer and voice-over artist was incomparable to none other. Awe-inspiring and iconic just like my dear Scarlet. May they both rest in peace, love and journey.

2015 THE YEAR OF THE LOCUST, ADD & STEPHANE ROLLAND

2015 THE YEAR OF THE LOCUST, ADD & STEPHANE ROLLAND

Either Way I’m Glad to See 2015 Go & Stephane Rolland Reign!
One after another after the other after someone and something else! Re! Re! Re!  I found myself reflecting, rethinking, revamping, recanting, remaking and revising. The indecisiveness seizing my mind like Stephane Roland’s 2015 Spring/Summer & Fall/Winter Collection- So many choices, not enough opportunities, too little resources and no loyalty amongst alliances. 2015, the seamless concoction of an undeniable year of the locust. Blame it on my ADD baby but it is my worst/best year ever and Yes, I am so happy to see it go!

ROLLING IN THE DEEP

ROLLING IN THE DEEP

I've been feeling the urge to just up and disappear. Just drop off the grid  with no sad songs goodbye. But what would I take with me? What would I wear? I'm thinking that I would wear something that would fashionably catapult me into a journey to a serene idealistic place of happiness and Riesling; A place where there is no FACEBOOK, twitter, Instagram, Linkedin, Pinterest etc??? <--Let me think on that.

THE QUEEN IS COMING

THE QUEEN IS COMING

Me & McQueen

Off with her head! Off with her head! Off with her damn head! Those were the words that came to mind when I first laid eyes upon the furiously-ferocious fabulously-fantastic designs of Alexander McQueen! ←-Catch those Fs. Trained at an early age, by my dearly departed Uncle Darryl a.k.a. Renee Dove, to spot “the greats” of haute couture, I was confident that Alexander and I were in for a long lasting love affair of the extraordinary. One filled with a deep aura of art filled theatrics, passion and rebellion. I just met fashion, for real!

“When I'm dead and gone, people will know that the twenty-first century was started by Alexander McQueen.” ~ Alexander McQueen
